Make your own marzipan roses

Marzipan roses are a great eye-catcher on cakes, chocolates, pies and cupcakes. They look fantastic, but are actually - with a little practice - easy to make yourself.

Here is a small step-by-step guide for beginners

You need:

Marzipan - in our example, Simply Pure liquid food coloring. If you don't want to color it yourself, you can buy pre-colored marzipan or use Sunny Orange or Very Cherry, for example.

Coloring marzipan:

Color 2/3 of the marzipan pink and the remaining 1/3 green. Knead vigorously with your hands until the color is distributed throughout the marzipan.

Forming petals (1/6):

Form the pink-colored marzipan into a roll and cut off thin slices.

Forming petals (2/6):

Flatten these slices slightly with your fingers and place them between a cut open freezer bag.

Forming petals (3/6):

Take a glass with a completely smooth bottom and use it to flatten the slices, making them slightly flatter on one side than the other. Alternatively, use a small rolling pin or, better yet, a dough scraper.

Forming petals (4/6):

Open the freezer bag and remove the first flat flower slice, starting with the thicker side.

Forming petals (5/6):

Roll it up in your hand with your fingertip, this will be the middle. Then take another petal, press it together slightly in the middle (thicker part downwards) and place it tightly around the middle.

Forming petals (6/6):

Do the same with another petal. Then place 3 more petals slightly higher and more curved and open.
Cut the bottom of the finished rose blossom flat.

Forming leaves (1/2):

Make the three green leaves in the same way as the flower petals. Use a round cookie cutter or knife to shape them into a pointed oval.

Forming leaves (2/2):

Use a modelling tool or toothpick to form leaf veins and then place them on the outside of the rose blossom.
Allow the finished flower to dry for 1-3 days and then attach the sweet work of art.

And with a little practice, the marzipan roses will eventually look like this...
